Improv to Sketch
In this high-energy workshop, Kids in the Hall’s Kevin McDonald teaches students how to generate sketch comedy through improvisation. Working in small groups, students improvise scenes which are then analyzed and developed with Kevin’s guidance. He walks the class through turning raw improv into a structured sketch—building characters, heightening the comedy, and shaping a narrative. By the end of the workshop, students will create their own improvised scenes and begin transforming them into original sketches. It’s a fun, fast-paced crash course in writing without the blank page.

One Line Premise
In this interactive workshop, Kids in the Hall’s Kevin McDonald teaches students how to take a single sketch premise and expand it into a full comedy scene. Each participant brings in a one-line idea—such as “What if a guy was $10 short of being a millionaire?”—and, the group will explore the humor in the situation, discovers comedic twists, and experiments with different ways to bring the scene to life. By the end of the workshop, everyone leaves with a strong outline and a clear roadmap to write a complete sketch. Students can also send Kevin their finished sketch post class to receive personalized feedback.
